How to Connect With People in the Music Industry
By Tarandip Rehal

Connecting with people in the music industry can be a little daunting and difficult at first, but if you know where to start it gets a little easier. Keep trying to connect with people who can help you break the ice, and don't give up in your efforts to make your passion a career.

Start talking to other bands and ask for a little help. If you don't know where to start, this can be a great opportunity to make connections with other people who do. Develop a relationship with some bands that you respect and who will respect you, and then ask for a little help in pointing you in the right direction. You may be surprised where they might lead you.

You should always ask a band who their promoter is and then ask for an introduction. Asking every band you encounter on a night out who their promoter is can add up over time. If you haven't found some connections by then, you need to work on your communication skills.

Consider spending money to attend a conference with like-minded individuals. There are music business conferences that are filled to the brim with label managers, promotion companies, publishers, and others who could do a world of good for your career. These conferences can cost a good deal of money to get into, but they are definitely worth the investment if you need to make connections.

Use social networking sites to connect with the people you want to meet. These sites are essential when trying to make connections with others, so why wouldn't you try to connect with people in the music industry? Every label and music professional seems to have a social media account, so take a step and introduce yourself.

Research and join websites that work hard to promote new music. Joining one of these websites is one of the best things you can do if you are a new act. You have to start somewhere, and this is a starting point that can help you be seen, heard, and connected with scouts and fans. Imagine everything that you could accomplish with a fan base and connections in the industry.

Of course, you should promote your music in other situations, too. Submit videos and demos to labels, promote your act on social networking sites as much as possible, and get out there to play in front of audiences. Everything needs to come together for you to be noticed in a positive way. You have to show that you are worth the risk and will be a positive addition to a label. Then connections may come pouring in.

Don't think you're wasting your time meeting people that seemingly have no connections. These people may have connections that you would never have guessed, or their own talents may become useful to you in the future. You never know who you might be talking to, so treat everyone with respect and keep your options open.

Consider working for a concert promoter or other musically-related agent. This is one of the best ways to see inside the music industry and learn the ropes. This is also where you may meet more connections that you would have otherwise. Spend a summer working as an intern, or consider working at one of these jobs full-time. The closer you are to the industry, the better chances of being successful.

With a lot of talent, some luck, and great connections, your career as a musician could go very far. Keep trying and don't expect success overnight. With a lot of diligence and determination, you may be the next hot item in the industry.
