Spoonbeach

stirs the soul and gets under the skin

Spoonbeach was founded By Bassist / Vocalist Joey “Spoonman” Cucchiara in the mid 90‘s. Their musical style was rock with subtle influences from the local Miami Rock & the Latin rock scene. The original line-up was a four piece group featuring Joey on Bass / Vocals, Gary Baldaccini on guitar, Jesus Giron on drums, and percussionist Billy Marrero. Spoonbeach performed live and toured in support of their self titled english CD, Spoonbeach.

The group released their second CD entitled “La Primera Cena”, a Latin music CD. The CD was released under the name of “Cuchara”, which means spoon in Spanish. This CD retained most of the original line-up, but also featured Cuban / American guitarist Frank Gonzalez. The band toured the Southeast U.S. and Puerto Rico, while appearing on Latin TV & radio talk shows.

After some changes, Spoonbeach is back with it’s founder, the “Spoonman” Joey Cucchiara on bass/vocals, Bob Lidell guitar / vocals, Steve "Dog" Monell drums and Devon Smith Keyboard / Vocals.

Currently, Spoonbeach features music from their English CD, cuts from their Latin rock CD, and new material as well. Music that blends different genres generally falls into two types. The first is the complex variety. It’s music that seems to thrive on rapid changes and forcing disparate styles together with often musically violent results. When it works; it’s art. When it fails; it’s hard to sit through. The second type is music that combines things in such a way that it feels natural. It’s the type of music that holds a groove and seems instantly familiar. That type of sound reveals its complexity only on deeper analysis. Such is the soundscape created by Spoonbeach. The music is a unique combination of Latin sounds, classic rock, progressive rock, jam sounds, funk and fusion. Yet, it never feels strained. The listener gets caught in the mood and just flows along. Only by digging deeply into the varied sounds is the mixed up nature of sounds revealed.

The music industry is tough business

While the overall balance of the album seldom shifts far in one direction or another, there are songs that feel more like a certain genre than other cuts. The thing is, whatever direction Spoonbeach pulls the sound, it always stirs the soul and gets under the skin. Even when it does head heavily in one direction, it still feels organic and connected to the rest of the sounds on the set. This is the kind of music that doesn’t require any kind of learning curve.

Currently the band is working on new material in their studio for their next album, which they are planning to release in the fall of 2012. They are currently promoting their music via the internet through several independent artist web sites, Internet radio airplay, social media and digital distribution sales through their distributor CD Baby. Their album, “Spoonbeach” is available for purchase at most music download sites such as iTunes and Amazon.com. Spoonbeach also regularly plays live at many South Florida venues and festivals.

Joey is the band's main song writer. He typically comes up with an idea for a melody and records it on a handheld recorder that he carries around. After he works out the bass line the guys all work on it together. They have a digital recording system in their studio where they lay down the tracks. Then they take the tracks to an engineer, Bill Blackstone. Bill works on the final mix and prepares the track for mastering.

The music industry is tough business, always has been. But Spoonbeach's philosophy is that success occurs when preparation meets opportunity. They feel they hard to promote themselves with the tools that are available. They feel that they will be successful when the right opportunity presents itself.

The industry has changed drastically because of the internet. It allows unsigned artists to promote their music worldwide without having a large amount of capital to invest. Spoonbeach have brought their music to people around the world with little investment. They believe that record labels are going to continue to offer less on any contract offered to a new artist. The power will lie in the distribution network. Indie artists who are successful in using the tools available today will be in a better position to negotiate with labels to obtain better distribution deals. The band sees that artists can better prepare themselves to deal with labels by receiving some sort of business education. Just being able to realize and accept the fact that they can't possibly know how to do something they were never taught and therefore looking for someone with business knowledge and experience to assist them would be a great help for any artist.
